Effective Openers: Dear John

At the beginning of the session, distribute copies of Dear John letter #1 to all participants and ask them to please provide the correct punctuation so that the letter is understandable. After giving people about 4 minutes to do the exercise, show Dear John letter #2 on a transparency and read it aloud. Next, show transparency #3 and read it out loud.

Remember the difference between an effective opener and a traditional icebreaker is this: you must make a training point after the exercise. The session for which I used this exercise was for a workshop on how to organize data in a meaningful way. The training point I made after completing this exercise was: "Adding punctuation is like organizing data. Until you decide how to organize it, it is often confusing and means nothing."

Letter #2
Dear John,
I want a man who knows what love is all about. You are generous, kind, thoughtful. People who are not like you admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me for other men. I yearn for you. I have no feelings whatsoever when we’re apart. I can be forever happy; will you let me be yours? Gloria

Letter #3
Dear John,
I want a man who knows what love is. All about you are generous, kind, thoughtful people who are not like you. Admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me for other men I yearn. For you, I have no feelings whatsoever. When we’re apart I can be forever happy. Will you let me be? Yours, Gloria
